Emerald Isle, NC, a small suburban community across the Bogue Sound from mainland North Carolina, has been home to Algonquins, pirates, and whalers. Nowadays, it is a quiet community most famous as the home of David Sedaris, who wrote about it in his book Calypso. Emerald Isle lets you get away from the city crowds but offers historical depth and richness.
Niche rates Emerald Isle an A for nightlife and for its quality public schools. Real estate and rental prices are higher than average, but you get what you pay for in unparalleled access to the Carolina coast. The Western Carteret Medical Center provides healthcare to Emerald Isle and the surrounding communities.
If you are bringing children, be sure to check out the Salty Pirate Water Park on Emerald Isle. A short drive on the newly updated B. Cameron Langston Bridge takes you to the picturesque Hammocks Beach State Park and the Bear Island Area Outstanding Reserve, or stay on the island to see the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores.
For a night on the town, try the Emerald Club and the Salt Bar for live music or watch the game at the Shark’s Den. Looking for some good-natured competition? Try Trivia Night at Island Time Tavern.
Whether you’re looking for a weekend away or a permanent home, the Emerald Isle is a quiet jewel in North Carolina’s crown.
